Ukraine fires missiles at southern Russian city – governor

An unspecified industrial site in Taganrog was hit during the barrage, a top regional official has said

Ukraine attacked the southern Russian port city of Taganrog with missiles early Wednesday morning, acting Rostov Region Governor Yury Slyusar has said.

“An industrial site has been damaged,” Slyusar wrote on Telegram, adding that “15 cars were burned out in the parking lot.”

“Early reports indicate that no people were harmed,” he wrote.

Locals told Telegram news channel SHOT that they heard air raid sirens and at least ten explosions in the sky over the city.

Taganrog, a city of 242,000 people, is located on the coast of the Sea of Azov in Rostov Region, which, like other regions bordering Ukraine, has been subjected to frequent drone and missile attacks.

Last month, the US authorized Ukraine to use American-supplied long-range missiles, including ATACMS, to strike targets in internationally recognized Russian territory. The White House previously restricted the use of these weapons by Kiev, citing concerns over escalation with Moscow.

Russia has a possible replacement for nuclear weapons – Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that the missile strikes would dramatically change the nature of the conflict and would be tantamount to direct NATO involvement in attacks against Russia.

On November 21, Russia used its new Oreshnik ballistic missile for the first time to hit a weapons factory in the Ukrainian city of Dnepr. Putin said the strike was retaliation against the lifting of restrictions on Kiev’s use of Western arms. During a government meeting on Tuesday, Putin described the Oreshnik as a powerful alternative to nuclear weapons.
